FAQ

What is ohmSTAR?

It's a precision programmable resistor, or resistance substitution box. It replaces a decade box, outputting real resistance from 1 Ω to 25 MΩ (ohmSTAR) or 1 Ω to 5 MΩ (ohmSTAR+).

Is the resistance real or electronically emulated?

It's real. Both models are 100% mechanically switched, using latching relays and precision fixed resistors.

What's the difference between ohmSTAR and ohmSTAR+?

Neither is better; they cover different ranges and step sizes. ohmSTAR covers 1 Ω to 25 MΩ in 0.1 Ω steps for $987. ohmSTAR+ covers 1 Ω to 5 MΩ in 0.01 Ω steps for $1,024. Pick the one that fits your bench.

Which sensors can it simulate?

Platinum RTDs, NTC thermistors, strain gauges, conductivity cells, and potentiometric position or level sensors. Anything else works if you can write it as a table.

How do I load a custom sensor table?

Make a two-column table in a spreadsheet and save it as .txt. Send it over USB with the Lookup Table tool, then press TABLE. The display shows your unit on top and ohms below. Or start from one of the verified tables in the Table Library.

Can I control it from a computer?

Yes. The USB link is two-way, so a computer can set values and read them back. See the command reference. The ohmSTAR Companion desktop app is out now for Windows, Mac and Linux.
